Moving In!

We realized the other day, due mostly to questions we were getting from friends back home, that we haven't written a blog about moving in yet! We skipped from living in an apartment in Glasgow to weekends out in the highlands! So here are a few of the details, and there is a slide show to go along with this posting.

We got the keys to our flat a few days before the moving people were to come. Matt and I have a tradition of staying the first night in a new house with our sleeping bags on the floor. I'm not sure how that started - probably had something to do with needing to be out of one place before we were actually moved into another... and the tradition held up here! Our camping gear was sent ahead of the household goods and had been living at Aaron's house, so he brought it all over and we camped in our new place. It actually work out really well - we are quite well equipped campers! We had all the comforts of home - coffee pot, sauce pan, bowls, sporks, coffee cups, drinking cups, salt and pepper. And since we had a stove and running water, we managed quite nicely the next morning when we woke up!

The truck arrived with our belongings at around 10 the next morning. The poor moving men were not told that we were on the fourth floor! There were 3 young men and one guy who was probably close to 60! They each took one flight - carrying boxes up to the next level to be picked up by the man above. Matt helped too. He couldn't let them do all the work! The packers made some of those boxes WAY too heavy - many were over 100 lbs. But, eventually the truck was empty and the house was full - it only took them 3 hours!!

When everything was in, we all took a lunch break, and then they helped us unpack the large items - mostly furniture. They put together the daybed, matt's office desk, the kitchen table and the sofa! Even though none of the boxes had been touched, it almost looked like a lived-in house! And it was certainly quite comfortable. And they unpacked the bed... Ahhhh... my bed. My, firm, comfy, doesn't-throw-your-back-out bed. That was the best night's sleep I'd had since we left Kentucky. It was bliss.

So that was moving day. Ever since then, I've been unpacking boxes at the rate of around 2 a day. Although, once the kitchen and clothing got unpacked, I slowed down quite a bit. It's amazing what you can live without when you don't know where it is and have to face tackling a stack of boxes to find it!

The kitchen is completely unpacked, and the only things I can't find are my salt cellar and garlic jar... weird. They must have been put last-minute into another box. The living room is set up, although we don't have a power adapter for the TV yet, and we've only converted half of the lamps to the new plugs. The bedroom is done, and I have about 2 more boxes of clothes to unpack. The office is... functional. Matt's desk is up and he can work there. The office is also the guest bedroom, and the day bed is there. But we haven't unpacked the boxes of books yet, which are sitting on the bed, which means i can't make the bed, which means the box of bedding can't be unpacked yet, which means there are still 2 boxes of bedding in the baby room. Speaking of which, that will be the final frontier - The Baby Room. That's where we have been hiding all the extra boxes. Waiting to be unpacked, waiting to be recycled, waiting to be re-used (a few things we brought just need to be re-packed because we can't use them for some reason). That room is piled literally to the ceiling with empty boxes. We can't put them all out for the recycling pick-up on the same day - the garbage men would not be happy to have a full truck after just one stop. So we put out about 4 a week. Slowly but surely the pile is dwindling.

That's about all I can think of for the moving in. Please head over to our slide-shows for photos of our new place complete with stuff!!
